And for the eating/fun side of Singapore, this is something my wife put together.

What to do in Singapore (As written by Kristine)

What to do in Singapore!

Yah! Singapore! Here's what I would check out if I were a tourist. I personally like to wander around neighborhoods, so I listed a few of my favorite places to explore in Singapore.

Take the MRT to Clarke Quay and wander along the water to the Merlion - The waterfront is kitchy-cute. I love it! There are a ton of bars that line both sides of the water, all the way to Marina Bay Sands where you see the iconic Singapore Merlion.

Walk from China Town to Tanjong Pagar - Take the MRT to Chinatown to check out the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple. Chinatown is the same as EVERY Chinatown in the world but the Temple is a must see. From the temple, cross the street and stop at the Lomography camera store, then walk down the street to the Maxwell Hawker stall for some local chow and then head down Tanjong Pagar road to see some very beautiful shop houses. If you want to check out a little SG-action in SG, turn onto Duxton Road to visit Littered with Books and grab a coffee at the PigeonHole.

Little India - I LOVE this area of town, particularly on Sunday when all the migrant workers have their day off. The streets are packed with men who are laughing, shouting and holding hands. This is the only area of town where pedestrians rule the road. The Tekka center has some amazing chicken briyani but I recommend grabbing a paper masala dosa at Komala Villa. Check out the temple and Mustafa center (it's an Indian mega mall open 24-hours, also a great thing to do when jet lagged and awake at 3am)

Arab Street and Haji lane - Smoke hookah late night, check out the mosque, be amazed at all the covered women. Haji lane is a great place to window shop. If Faina is small-size she should definitely bring money to spend on the awesome clothes and shoes on this small shopping street. If she's more American size, looking is still fun! Also, this is the only area of town where you should eat the hummus.

Do you like Monkeys? There are a ton of wild monkeys in MacRitchie nature Reserve. If you're into nature, the Botanical Gardens are lovely. Unless you really like to see captive animals at night, I would skip the night safari.

East and Drink Singapore!

This country is amazingly clean. You can drink the water and the local food courts (called hawker centers) may present a dirty image but are safe and amazingly hygenic. This is where the majority of Singaporeans eat their meals. If you see a long line, that means the food at that particular stall is amazing. People queue for hours for food. It's odd but loveable.

Grab an expensive drink at the top of Marina Bay Sands (only one because it's pricey!) - The view is fantastic and you get to see the world famous infinity pool.

When you're jet lagged and awake at 3AM and hungry (all of this will happen!)- Grab a cab and head to Swee Choon Dim Sum. It's open from 6PM to 10AM and it's always packed! The Xiao Long Bao is ah-mazing. Best Dim sum outside of China.

Have dinner at the Newton Hawker Center - this food centre is in all the tourist guide books, but locals flock to it as well. Try the local dishes! My favorites are BBQ sting ray, chinese rojak and popiah. (Perhaps we can go here on our date, I love this food!)

The best thing to do in Singapore is EAT! Things you should definitely put in your mouth (in addition to the items listed above):

  • Laksa - most delicious soup ever!
  • Breakfast on a oft boiled egg and Kaya Toast with a kopi (local coffee made with condensed milk)
  • Paper masala dosa
  • Lor Mee (Specialty from our neighborhood, Tiong Bahru)
  • Only in Singapore! Peranakan Food! (Chinese meets Malay)
  • Must eat an Iced Kachang for desert
  • Beancurd - OMG, better than ice cream

Everyone asks if you've had Chili Crab but it's expensive and not that remarkable.

Let me know if you have any questions!
