Why send a monthly update email?

Why do it?

  1. It will make you a stronger CEO. It's important to take pause each month to reflect on the larger business direction.
  2. Helps you think about, and reflect on your company KPIs.
  3. You should share it with management (or your entire team if small), so they all have a deeper understanding of the business.
  4. Investor relations should be two-way, not just upward reporting. By updating investors, you should be getting something back. Maybe that's an ask (understanding a new market, bizdev intro, new hire,...)
  5. Keeps you top of mind with investors - helpful for that random connection/intro.

Important to note - VCs will take this into mind during follow-on investment rounds. If you're not showing good governance through a monthly update and quarterly board meetings, it will 100% affect a VC's decision to invest. We have opted to pass on follow-on investments when there have not been consistent monthly updates from the founders.

A monthly update will take you less than 0.5 hours (you have 160 working hours to choose from). Aim to go out on the 1st of each month. And just BCC all investors (or major investors if you have too large a cap table).
